A family in Tulita is in mourning after the body of River Clement was recovered after a week-long search.
A member of the family posted the news to their social media account on Aug. 21 and followed up the next day.
"As our families hearts are broken they are somehow also filled with gratitude," said Lynda MacCauley. "Our River was found and is home, wishing it could have been a better outcome but we have him physically with us. It was unbelievable to see how everyone pulled together, and how fast action was put in place; right from day one, right from the start.
"The amount of people from our community who came out to help, and the ones from out of town," she added. "On behalf on the MacCauley Family, the Lennie Family and the Clement Family we express our most sincerest appreciation."
A search was initiated on Aug. 15 after Clement was reported missing. A drifting boat which had been parked overnight with five lift jackets was found with only four life jackets and some of his belongings.
Search and rescue operations were conducted in both Tulita and Norman Wells.
A spokesperson for the RCMP said the Office of the Chief Coroner would conduct an investigation.
"On the evening of August 21st, Tulita RCMP were notified that a person had been located deceased on the shore of the Mackenzie River between Tulita and Norman Wells, near Prohibition Creek," said NT RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Josh Seaward. "Officers attended the location and assisted in the recovery of the person, who was confirmed to be 16-year-old River Clement, who had previously been reported missing on Aug. 15th.
"The Coroner’s Office has been engaged and is investigating in partnership with the RCMP. The RCMP extends it sincere condolences to the family."
