Fort McPherson RCMP were called to a vehicle rollover on the Dempster Highway which temporarily closed down the Peel River ferry.
Police say they responded to the crash site west of the Peel River on Highway 8 shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Upon arrival, police found a commercial truck hauling a diesel fuel tank overturned in the ditch. Fuel had spilled out of the tank and a team was called in by the Department of Environment and Climate Change to manage the spill. The accident reduced the highway to one-lane of traffic for several hours. The driver was taken to Inuvik for medical care for minor injuries.
The cause of the accident is not yet known and police are still investigating.
“The NWT Department of Infrastructure was also on site,” said NT RCMP media relations officer Julie Plourde. “Anyone with information on this matter is asked to contact the Fort McPherson RCMP at 867-952-1111 or Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com. In the event of an emergency call, 911.”
