Two individuals are facing drug charges in Behchoko after police say they found crack cocaine and open cannabis products in a car.

Police were on patrol at roughly 5:29 p.m. on Aug. 17 when they pulled a vehicle over to do a sobriety check.

"Upon making contact with the driver, open cannabis products were observed in the vehicle and the occupants were arrested for Cannabis Act offences," said NT RCMP public information officer Cpl. Josh Seaward. "A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of approximately 286 grams of suspected crack-cocaine.

Brock Mercredi, 19, of Yellowknife, is charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

A youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has also bee charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Both appeared before a justice of a peace and remain in custody.

"The RCMP notes that while this may seem like a small seizure in some places, this quantity of drugs represents significant harm in a community the size of Behchoko," Seaward added. "Anyone with information on this matter or the illicit drug trade in the community is asked to contact the Behchoko RCMP at 867-392-1111 or Crime Stoppers at https://p3ptips.com."
