A Paulatuk man is dead and a coroner's office investigation is underway after a search party found him in the water on July 21.

Police were notified at 10:30 a.m that the individual, who has not been identified, had left his whaling camp, according to NT RCMP media relations officer Const. Josh Seaward. The man supposedly told others he intended to make the five-hour trip back across the Beaufort Sea to Paulatuk alone.

"Given concerns for the safety of the individual due to their reported condition, as well as wind and ice conditions on the sea, an RCMP search manager was engaged and search and rescue efforts began," said Seaward. "At approximately 11:48 a.m., a local search and rescue team located the boat and the individual, who was deceased in the water. The matter remains under investigation in partnership with the Northwest Territories Coroner Service.

"The RCMP extends its sincere condolences to the family of the individual and our gratitude to the search and rescue personnel involved," the police stated on July 22.
