Two overdue hunters from Aklavik have been located safe and sound following a search and rescue operation.
Aklavik RCMP say they were notified of two overdue hunters on May 19 at approximately 5 p.m. The hunters had last communicated with their family at 3 a.m. that day, using an inReach satellite phone to indicate they were stuck in a slush overflow near Fish River.
Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) and an RCMP search unit were deployed over the area and the two hunters were located at approximately 8:45 p.m. They were transported back to town with no injuries.
"Aklavik RCMP wants to thank the community members for their assistance in locating the hunters," said NT RCMP media relations officer Julie Plourde.
Police are using the rescue to remind people of safety practices while going on the land.
Travellers are advised to keep a satellite phone, radio or other means of communication on hand and be sure to know how it works. Telling others of where you're going and how long you expect to be out is essential. Pack extra clothing in case the ones you're wearing get wet and make sure you are wearing layers to adjust to changing weather conditions. An emergency supply kit is also highly recommended.
