Anyone who has cargo to be barged to the Sahtu region has four days to get it to Hay River.

Marine Transportation Services announced on June 26 it has set its 2025 cargo acceptance dates for the Sahtu region.

“MTS is accepting cargo departing from Hay River to Tulita, Norman Wells, and Fort Good Hope until Monday, June 30,” reads the notice. “The Canadian Coast Guard has begun placing navigational aids (buoys) toward Fort Providence. MTS is hopeful that a sufficient number of buoys will be placed to allow sailing operations to begin in the Sahtu.

“Residents should be aware that MTS sailing schedules can be subject to change depending on conditions and may be required to pick up their cargo if the barge cannot sail.”

The release notes that MTS is monitoring water levels and was “optimistic” about the 2025 season.

The final cargo date for Lutsel K'e is July 6, with a second trip planned for Aug. 3. Kugluktuk, Ulukhaktok, Paulatuk and Sachs Harbour's final acceptance date is Aug. 12. A date for Aklavik is yet to be determined.
