An unoccupied house was destroyed by fire in Hay River on July 24 and police have deemed the incident suspicious.

RCMP are asking residents in the areas of Camsell Crescent, Gaetz Drive and Woodland Drive to check their security camera footage between 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. that day for any suspicious activity.

Police say an officer noticed the smell of smoke that afternoon and, upon further investigation, came across a home in flames. The Hay River Fire Department was called to the scene.

"However, the residence was a total loss," said RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Josh Seaward. "The residence was not occupied at the time and no injuries were reported. The matter is considered suspicious and the Office of the Fire Marshal has been contacted to investigate the cause.

Information on this matter can be relayed to Hay River RCMP at 867-874-1111 or through Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com.
