First intake a go as friendship centre set to launch first 28-day addiction program on the land near Rankin Inlet in June

The Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre is at full speed gearing-up for its first intake of a 28-day addiction program on the land near Rankin Inlet.

The first intake will be aimed at male participants from Rankin Inlet and will run from June 2 until June 30.

The friendship centreโ€™s addiction program manager, Linda Haulli, said the centre will, eventually, host a womenโ€™s intake, followed by future intakes aimed at participants from the entire Kivalliq region.

She said this being the centreโ€™s first intake, it is only geared to Rankin Inlet residents as part of a trial run because of it being so new to the programโ€™s delivery.

โ€œWe did hire facilitators from outside of Rankin Inlet who are coming in to do the 28-day, on-the-land-treatment program with the participants,โ€ said Haulli.

โ€œA schedule is also in place for the 28-day program. This being our very first intake, we aim to have at least eight male participants at our campsite outside of Rankin Inlet.

โ€œWe have a lot of support from the community for this program and are doing our very best to ensure its success.โ€

Haulli said the addictions-program team will have at least 20 to 25 sessional staff to assist the daily needs of the program.

She said the two facilitators who are coming in to run the program will be dealing with the participants only.

โ€œSo, in our schedule, we have included evening activities for the participants, which our local staff will be at the campsite for, as well. Also, the community counsellors from each community in the Kivalliq region will be on-site if any of the participants would like to have additional counselling.

โ€œWe have also scheduled Inuit traditional knowledge as part of the evening activities.

โ€œI would like to add that a treatment program like this is highly needed in Nunavut. To be able to offer a program like this in the Kivalliq region could very well be our first step to, possibly, having similar programs succeeding in Cambridge Bay and Clyde River.

โ€œMany organizations have recognized that this is a much-needed program in Nunavut and are supporting us in the running of our initial effort and hoping for its success.โ€
