RCMP in Hay River say they discovered old, degraded explosives at a home in the West Channel area on June 24.
The materials were found by the family of a deceased former prospector while cleaning out the residence, police say.
Due to the unstable nature of deteriorating explosives, police evacuated homes within a 150-metre radius while waiting for an explosive technician. The technician safely reduced the volatility of the explosives before they were removed and disposed of, according to RCMP.
Police also caution that when explosives degrade, they become more dangerous.
"The RCMP wishes to remind the public to treat any blasting equipment or suspected explosive ordinance as dangerous," a June 26 news release stated.
RCMP also note to contact local detachments for help if anyone encounters any of these materials.
