A lot of us don鈥檛 like being told what to do. Some are even less receptive to advice when they鈥檙e behind the wheel.

More than a year ago, we found ourselves facing still unfamiliar routines: health restrictions limiting in-person gatherings. Many across Canada, and the globe, must turn to the virtual world, it is a necessity. We all depend on the internet for connectivity at work, school, and home, this has become the safest (and in many circumstances) the only option during the pandemic. But for the North?

Where there鈥檚 smoke, there鈥檚 fire.

Those council people and others from the business community who voted against a new temporary shelter where the Aurora tourist company used to be did not necessarily vote against the location, they voted for themselves.

From October 15 through 17, delegates from all over the NWT will gather online for the 18th UNW Triennial Convention. The UNW Convention is the 鈥渟upreme governing body鈥� of our union.

By now you鈥檝e heard that 4 of 7 Yellowknife city councillors shot down the GNWT鈥檚 application to use the Aurora Village building as a temporary day shelter for unhoused people. Totally uncool; winter is fast approaching.

Four councillors voted against allowing a temporary homeless shelter at Franklin Avenue and 48 Street.

I went for a walk the other day, not a long walk, but on a route I hadn鈥檛 walked for a few days. Along the way I picked up over a dozen discarded face masks and the same number of wads of tissue, which I will just call snot rags, because I assume people have blown their nose into some tissues and then just thrown them on the ground. Throwing both away, as a lot of people seem to do, is hardly a hygienic practice and both are a form of litter and hazardous biological waste.

Why can鈥檛 this happen to me whenever I go to the corner store for a quick run?

No one denies that we needed immediate and determined action to turn the tide of COVID sweeping through the territories around. However, this 10-day lock down seems to target the private sector most of all at a time when it was trying so hard to get back on its feet.
