Many young athletes from Hay River made it to the medal podium at the 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games.
Sixteen competitors from the host community – along with one from Enterprise – earned an ulu as an individual competitor or as part of a team.

The ulus came in all colours – gold, silver and bronze. In fact some of the young Hay Riverites won more than one medal.
One of the Arctic Winter Games champions is Tyrell Wilgosh, who won his gold ulu as a member of the midget male hockey team.
At the opening ceremonies on March 18, Wilgosh told The Hub that his goal was to win a gold ulu.
As for actually doing that, he said, "It was pretty sweet. It was a good experience."
Dane Dupuis was another medal winner, earning a silver ulu as a member of the NWT's junior male volleyball team.
"We were aiming for gold, but we'll take what we can get, I guess," Dupuis said at the March 24 closing ceremonies of the games.
