Yellowknife RCMP say they are investigating multiple reports of human trafficking in the city.
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø has spoken to several business and property owners operating in the downtown core about concerns with public safety. A few have said they witnessed crimes taking place, including trafficking as well as sex work.
Though repeatedly asked, police won't provide any details about their investigation, including how many reports RCMP have received, where trafficking is alleged to have taken place and how long the investigation has been going on.
"Due to the nature of these matters, we cannot disclose any further detail at this time, other than to say no charges have been laid," said RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Josh Seaward. He specifically noted that the city's Specialized Response Unit is investigating the human trafficking allegations.
Asked if the territorial government is aware of any alleged trafficking or prostitution happening in Yellowknife, Joletta Larocque, acting president of NWT Housing, told ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø on Aug. 7 that the GNWT had not been contacted about a specific time or instance where any trafficking or prostitution allegedly occurred.
The City of Yellowknife was contacted for comment on potential human trafficking within its jurisdiction, but the municipality repeatedly referred ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø to the RCMP.
