Hay River has managed to get around one major annual issue with no impact to the town at all.
The town announced on Sunday that break-up for 2025 is now over with no risk of flooding anywhere in the area. An update posted to the town's social media feed indicated that all ice has flowed through the Hay River itself and was now in Great Slave Lake.
Water levels have also decreased quite a bit, the post added, and there will most likely be no flood threat.
There has been plenty of break-up activity on May 3 with ice accumulations throughout the town proper that spread out to Delancey Estates the day before. That had cleared out of the river system through the West Channel. There were also ice remains throughout most of the East Channel around Vale Island before the weekend with some small accumulations of intact ice around the Rudd Channel and the West Point First Nations area of the West Channel.
Break-up of the river in town started in late April with water beginning to flow around Alexandra Falls with ice thickness measured at around 24 in. at best.
In a previous interview with 窪蹋勛圖厙, Mayor Kandis Jameson said one of the big reasons why the threat of flooding was low this year came down to the thin ice on the river.
Its not as thick as it has been in past years, she said. I can remember ice thickness at 6 ft., 8 ft., and even 12 ft. in the past and thats when you run into problems."
The town will still be monitoring to make sure nothing untoward happens while starting to prepare for the wildfire season.
