An investigation into suspected criminal activity in Inuvik has resulted three people being arrested and charged.

According to a Thursday release from RCMP, police began their work on the residence in question and ended up executing a search warrant on that location on April 27.

Officers who entered the home found three people inside, one of which was arrested at the scene. The two others managed to elude capture by escaping out a back window.

They were quickly caught as one male was apprehended without incident a short time later, while the other was found at another residence in town and taken into custody without incident.

A search of the residence turned up 125 grams of suspected crack cocaine and more than $5,000 in cash. The RCMP's Critical Incident Program, which includes the Emergency Response Team, G Division Crisis Negotiation Team and Police Dog Services, assisted Inuvik RCMP in the operation.

The three accused include Abubakar Bakal, 31, of Edmonton, who was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, wilfully obstructing a peace officer, carrying a concealed weapon, pointing a firearm at a person, uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death, break and enter with intent and forcible confinement.

Bakar was remanded into custody and is due in court in Inuvik on Thursday.

Candice Cockney, 40, of Inuvik is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and wilfully obstructing a peace officer. Steven Nerysoo, 34, of Inuvik has been charged with wilfully obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest.

Both Cockney and Nerysoo were both released from custody with conditions and are due to appear in court in Inuvik on June 17.

“I would like to praise the excellent work done by Inuvik RCMP and the NT RCMP Critical Incident Program who conducted a thorough investigation into this incident," stated Staff Sgt. Jesse Aubin, detachment commander of Inuvik RCMP. "The Inuvik RCMP will continue to target individuals who seek to profit from the illicit sale of these harmful substances."

If you have any information on this case or any other nefarious activity in the town, you're asked to call Inuvik RCMP at 867-777-1111 or submit a tip online to Crime Stoppers at p3tips.com.
