Judges from the Supreme Court of Canada are coming to Yellowknife in September as part of the court’s 150th anniversary commemorations.
Chief Justice Richard Wagner as well as justices Nicholas Kasirer and Michelle O'Bonsawin will visit the city Sept. 14-15, according to an Aug. 6 news release.
Over those two days, the judges are expected to engage with a wide range of community members. Activities will include visits with Elders at the Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation Camp; meetings with the local legal community and specialized court staff; and interactive sessions with students and newly called lawyers to discuss the justice system.
The judges also committed to making themselves available to the media.
"Visiting Yellowknife is a meaningful opportunity to learn from the people, cultures and traditions of the North," said Wagner. "As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the court, my colleagues and I are committed to listening, building relationships and ensuring that justice reflects the diversity of all the communities we serve."
NWT Chief Justice Shannon Smallwood stated this visit gives ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøers a chance to connect with Supreme Court judges and build understanding of both the justice system and the North’s diversity.
The trip to Yellowknife is the third of five Supreme Court of Canada visits to communities across the country in 2025. Court members are also scheduled to make stops in Sherbrooke, Que., in October and Thunder Bay, Ont., in November.
