A landfill fire that has been smouldering over the past month in Kugaaruk increased in severity this week, and local first responders will now receive help from Iqaluit, according to GNs Department of Community Services.

Three firefighters and one deputy fire marshal have been deployed from Iqaluit to help battle the blaze in the Kugaaruk hamlet, Community Services spokesperson Ryleigh McPherson told Nunavut News on Thursday.

The size of the fire is unknown until personnel are on scene and able to assess conditions. The exact cause of the fire is unknown, McPherson said.

Smoke from the fire was not affecting the community as of Thursday, a Department of Community Services news release stated.

Air quality is being monitored and the GN is working with partners to assess conditions. The community will be updated if conditions change, the news release reads.

A previous landfill fire in Kugaaruk occurred in June 2024.
