Pro-Palestinian protestors march through Iqaluit's downtown

Seek end to war in Gaza

Motorists passing through Iqaluit's downtown encountered a protest Tuesday afternoon as 26 pro-Palestinian activists marched through the city.

Demonstrators met in front of RCMP headquarters at 4:45 p.m. and marched down Federal Road, along Queen Elizabeth Way, back along Niaqunngusiariaq Road, and ended at the east corner of Niaqunngusiariaq and Queen Elizabeth Way.

Two throat-singers capped off the event at 5:15 p.m., while protesters stood in a circle around them.

Among those marching was Robert Tookoome, who said he wants governments around the world to stop supplying weapons to Israel.

" Canada was born out of a genocide of Indigenous people. And I understand what the Palestinian people are going through, because we went through a similar situation where we were forced into residential schools," Tookoome said.

Leading chants using a megaphone and guiding the route of the march was Imaruittuq Angutimarik, who said she opposed the war in Gaza.

" I believe Indigenous voices are very powerful, and we should start speaking up for things we care about, even if it's across the ocean," Angutimarik said.
