Prime Minister Mark Carney will be in the NWT next week.
Patrick Vaughan, director of communications for Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty, confirmed as much to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø on Friday morning.
"He will be in the NWT next week for the major projects summit with Inuit Crown Partnership Committee," he said. That will be happening in Inuvik on July 24.
Carney is to also scheduled to visit his birthplace of Fort Smith.
Multiple news outlets say Carney will discuss several matters, including how to apply the Building Canada Act in a way that honours Inuit land‑claim agreements and involves Inuit partners.
The act enables the federal government to fast‑track projects it deems nationally significant by bypassing certain review requirements set out in various federal laws. That’s been met with some pushback from various Indigenous groups and leaders.
Carney recently held the First Nations Major Projects Summit in Quebec to speak with First Nations groups on how to best build major projects with Indigenous peoples.
"It’s time to build big projects that will transform and connect our economy. Central to this mission is shared leadership with Indigenous Peoples. Working in partnership, we can seize this opportunity and build lasting prosperity for generations," following the meeting, which saw several representatives walk out in protest.
Prior to his trip to the NWT, Carney will be in Huntsville, Ont., to meet with premiers from across the country from July 21 to 23. Premier R.J. Simpson will be in attendance for that.
