The progress made over the past two decades shows what is possible when Indigenous governments and public governments work in true partnership, each bringing their strengths to serve the people of the North, stated Premier R.J. Simpson on Tuesday in marking the 20th anniversary of the Tlicho Government.

Premier R.J. Simpson marked the 20th anniversary of the Tlicho Government, the first in the NWT to combine a comprehensive land claim with a self-government agreement.

Simpson called the agreement a landmark achievement and praised the Tlicho Governments leadership in governance, land stewardship and cultural revitalization.

The progress made over the past two decades shows what is possible when Indigenous governments and public governments work in true partnership, each bringing their strengths to serve the people of the North, stated the premier.

Simpson thanked the leaders, Elders and community members who helped make the agreement and said the milestone is a source of pride for both the Tlicho and the territory as a whole.

On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I congratulate the leadership and citizens of the Tlicho Nation past and present and all those who work to bring the vision of the Tlicho Agreement to life, he said. We look forward to continuing to work together to build on this strong foundation. This is a proud milestone for the Tlicho and for the Northwest Territories.
