A 26-year-old man in Pangnirtung has been charged after another man was slashed with a knife, leaving him with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

After the RCMP responded to the July 29 incident, the accused allegedly assaulted the arresting officer.

The victim, 23, was later released from health centre after being treated.

This appears to be a random, isolated incident  the victim and the accused did not know each other, said Sgt. Scott Kirychuk of the Pangnirtung RCMP.

Joanasie Qumuaqtuq has been charged with assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer and failing to comply with a probation order.

A bail hearing was scheduled for July 31. Results were unknown as of press deadline.
