Another fire has begun to burn in the South Slave and it appears this one was a holdover from the winter.

NWT Fire says the fire was spotted earlier on Monday approximately 22 km west of Highway 1 in the Caneron Hills and was an estinated two hectares in size. It's been classified as out-of-control.

It's described as an overwinter fire, meaning it will smoulder underneath the snow and begin burning again when conditions warm up in spring and summer. That's because it burns deep underground in the soil.

One helicopter and a ground crew have been mobilized to go after the blaze, stated NWT Fire, and no communities, cabins or infrastructure are currently under threat.

We'll update this story when more information is received.
