With a federal election in the offing later this year, 窪蹋勛圖厙 reached out to the candidates in the NWT, posing questions and giving them a chance to share their vision for the territory. We will be publishing responses we receive from candidates when we receive them with the second one being Kimberly Fairman, who's running for the Conservatives.
With a soon-to-come election, we'd like to give you a chance to share your vision for the North.
Canada's economy is in a worse state than Canadians realized. The Liberal-NDP government failed to meet its fiscal objective of keeping the deficit under control and as a result more of our tax dollars are going to paying off that debt than towards the federal health transfer!
As your Conservative Candidate, it is imperative that we engage on the path for our territory to ensure prosperity, unity and growth for all of our residents. My goal is to see the Northwest Territories participating and benefiting from a strong Canadian economy, more jobs and more take-home pay.
What does the future look like to you, both for the NWT and Canada?
I think the Liberals have left us with a lot of work to do. Their out-of-control spending has left us with a huge deficit, housing is unaffordable, people are being taxed at a rate that has them choosing between buying food or paying rent! We need to get spending under control while looking for opportunities to strengthen our economy. Individuals deserve to take home more of their hard-earned money and spend it on the things they choose to spend it on.
What are your main goals you want to accomplish as MP?
First, well "Axe the tax." The carbon tax is making life more expensive for everyone, from gas to groceries. It's time to put more money back into the pockets of hard-working Canadians, where it belongs. We will scrap the carbon tax and help bring down the cost of living.
Second, were going to "Build the homes." Its no secret that housing is in crisis. Young families, newcomers and first-time buyers are being priced out of the market. Under the Conservative leadership, we will work to clear the barriers preventing new homes from being built, making it easier for people to achieve the dream of homeownership.
Third, were going to "Fix the budget." The runaway spending in Ottawa has created a massive deficit, which hurts all Canadians. We need responsible management of your tax dollars for every dollar that a Conservative government would spend, we would need to find a dollar to save.
And finally, we will "Stop the crime." Our communities deserve to be safe. We need to restore law and order, strengthen the justice system, and ensure that those who commit serious crimes face serious consequences. Everyone should feel safe in their neighbourhood, and under a Conservative government, we will make that a reality. With "jail not bail" policy for serious crimes.
What are your biggest concerns for the NWT and Canada? How do you plan to action those?
The NDP-Liberals hiked the capital gains tax inclusion rate to 66 per cent as of June 25, 2024, which Conservatives will reverse. [Conservative leader Pierre] Poilievre will make up the lost revenue from Axing the Liberal jobs tax by cutting taxpayer-funded corporate welfare and handouts that have been wasteful and ineffective.
Trudeaus chief economic advisor, Mark Carney, and former Finance minister Chrystia Freeland supported this tax increase, which hurt job rates and is driving billions of dollars out of our country right as we face tariff threats from [U.S.] President [Donald] Trump.
What we need is a government that encourages growth and investment.
The tax will make homebuilding more expensive during a housing crisis, force doctors to leave Canada during a doctor shortage and make food more expensive during a cost-of-living crisis. The C.D. Howe Institute has confirmed that the capital gains tax hike will kill 414,000 jobs and cause Canadas GDP to decline by $90 billion.
The Conservative Party of Canada has a plan to bring jobs, production and paycheques home by axing job-killing NDP-Liberal taxes and unleashing the potential and power of our workers.
What's something you'd like more people to know about you?
In connecting with many of you already, I often hear people say that they dont know much about policy-level politics I challenge that! One thing that you will come to learn about me is that I am a fierce advocate that we will not have meaningful policy in the North without first understanding the perspectives and experiences of those on the receiving end of programs and services. You all have valuable information to contribute, so lets work together for a greater future. I am excited, and committed to having the conversations, listening to learn and understand and being intentional in my approach to better align the principles used for federal programs/services with enhanced experiences of those receiving the services.
