Here's where to vote in Yellowknife

Advance polling set to begin on Friday at Explorer Hotel or you can vote at an Elections Canada office before April 22

Yellowknife has a number of voting stations at the ready for you to cast your ballot in the federal election. Here's a list of where to vote and when you can do it:

Vote now

Election keeners can vote in-person at an Elections Canada office any time on or before the afternoon of April 22. The office in Yellowknife is on the second floor of Nova Plaza on 5019 52 Street.

Voting hours are between 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. As with voting at the ballot box, you need to bring your voter information card that has either arrived, or will be arriving, in your mailbox. If you don't have one, you'll have to bring proper identification and proof that you live in the riding you're voting in..

If you wish to vote by mail, you can do so, but only  You will get a special voting kit mailed to you with instructions on what to do. Once your application to vote by mail is approved, you won't be able to change your voting method. That means you can't vote in person on election day or at an advance poll.

On Election Day

Voting hours are between 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., according to Elections Canada. You'll need to vote at the location printed on your voter information card. If you don't know where to vote, to find your polling station.

Advance voting days

There are four days set aside for advance voting at the Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife beginning on Friday and going until April 21. Advance voting can be done between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. For other advance poll locations, check the Elections Canada website.

Residents who need an interpreter or other assistance can make requests at Elections Canada by April 22. You can also call 1-800-361-8935 if you're hard of hearing.

Those who are hospitalized on election day will be able to vote by special ballot from their hospital room. According to Elections Canada, patients will be advised in advance when special ballot voting will take place. An election officer will visit patients either by going room to room or by appointment and help them fill out their application. They can also help the patient cast their ballot, if needed.

If you're serving with the Canadian Forces, you have the option of voting at either the assigned civilian polling station where you reside or you can vote by special ballot at a military voting station that will be set up at either your base or unit. You can also cast a ballot on advance polling days or vote by mail.

Eligible voters need to be at least 18 years of age on or before election day and must be a Canadian citizen as per Elections Canada guidelines. Incarcerated individuals can also vote at the correctional facility they're currently housed at and those who are homeless are also eligible to cast a ballot.

The 2021 general election saw a record low turnout of less than 50 per cent in the NWT, according to Elections Canada. The rate in the 2019 election was 53 per cent while in 2015, it was 63 per cent.

The NWT has four candidates to choose from. They are:

  • Angela Davidson (Rainbow Eyes) for the Green Party;
  • Kelvin Kotchilea for the NDP;
  • Kimberly Fairman for the Conservative Party;
  • Rebecca Alty for the Liberal Party.
