Police say they got a tip on June 29 that a residence was on fire in Rowe’s Trailer Court. Arriving on scene, they say the home was a total loss.

Two people are in custody after Hay River RCMP responded to a reported arson late last month.

Police say they got a tip on June 29 that a residence was on fire in Rowe’s Trailer Court and people were fleeing the area.

Officers and the Hay River Fire Department showed up. RCMP say the structure was a total loss, with neighbouring houses sustaining damage as well.

“Evidence indicated that the fire was deliberately set,” according to RCMP, who have since arrested two suspects.

Tyrone Stephens, 22, of Hay River, and Brent Norn, 43, of K'atl'odeeche First Nation have been charged with arson and endangering life, according to police.

Stephens faces an added charge of wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence.

Norn, who was already bound by court conditions from previous charges, faces a further charge of failure to comply with an undertaking.

Both appeared before a justice of the peace and have since been held in jail.
