Some unusual weather may have sped up this year’s NWT territorial fastball championship, but it didn’t stop it.

The annual tournament alternates between Hay River and Yellowknife, and this year it was the South Slave's turn to host.

Yellowknife’s Gastown Giants emerged as the 2025 champions after a 9-2 win over the Fire Prevention Prospectors, another Yellowknife team.

Getting to the championship game in some ways wasn’t straightforward. Organizers had to cut five games from the schedule due to heavy rain last weekend.

"It was worse than we expected and the fields were in pretty bad shape," lead organizer Terry Rowe told ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.

To keep the event going, teams competed in a shortened round-robin format, with each squad playing four games. The top two teams then advanced straight to the final, skipping the usual playoff format.

Despite the changes, Rowe said the tournament was a success.

"We had a lot of spectators and people coming by," he said. "It was good to see for at least a day or so anyways."

Meanwhile, in Yellowknife, bad weather also disrupted the opening day of Folk on the Rocks, with thunder and lightning overhead. Rowe noted that Hay River wasn’t hit quite as hard.

The next championship tournament is scheduled to take place in Yellowknife in 2026.
