Hay River residents woke up to a new electricity provider on March 1, as the (NTPC) officially took over from Naka Power. While the name on the bill has changed, NTPC says the transition has been designed to be smooth and hassle-free for customers.
For most people, the change will be seamless, says Erin Ladouceur, NTPCs Director of Customer Service. Your power stays on, your account has already been transferred and theres no immediate action required.
What to expect from NTPC
For Hay River residents, day-to-day electricity service will continue as usual. Outstanding balances from Naka Power accounts have been transferred to NTPC and will appear on the first NTPC bill. The biggest difference? Customers who were previously set up for pre-authorized payments will need to re-enter their banking details due to privacy regulations.

Naka Power wasnt able to transfer banking information to us, which is a safeguard to protect personal financial data, Ladouceur explained. But its an easy fix - customers just need to complete an NTPC Options form, which can be found on our website.
Customers moving in March should contact NTPCs Customer Care team to set up new accounts. The first NTPC bills will be mailed out in late April, based on meter readings taken in mid-April, with payment due in mid-May.
For those enrolled in budget billing, NTPC is working to recreate their previous payment setup. Well be reaching out to confirm participation and our budget rollover process will take place in August, Ladouceur said.
New online account portal
NTPC is also introducing Hay River customers to, an online customer portal where users can view their electricity usage, pay bills and manage their accounts. However, since NTPC is issuing new account numbers, residents will first need to create login credentials.
T堯梗 gives customers full control over their accounts, said Ladouceur. If anyone needs help getting started, our Customer Care team is happy to walk them through it.
A transition years in the making
The change in electricity provider dates back to 2015, when the Town of Hay River decided to explore whether a lower cost service provider could be found. NTPC was chosen following a comprehensive request for proposal process. The transfer of the distribution franchise took effect on March 1, 2025.
While changes like this can raise questions, NTPC wants customers to know theyre in good hands. Were excited to be serving Hay River, Ladouceur said. Our priority is making sure every customer has reliable service and a smooth transition. If anyone has questions, they can reach out anytime.
