A Monday morning fire at a home on Foreman Court started due to a basement appliance, according to the City of Yellowknife.

The city's fire division responded to a report of fire and smoke at a residence on Foreman Court at 8 a.m. on June 16.

Firefighters determined that an electrical fire originating in the home's basement was the primary cause, according to the City of Yellowknife. The homeowner had already shut off power to the affected appliance before crews arrived and the fire self-extinguished.

"Firefighters entered the residence and found smoke throughout the home, which had been distributed via the ventilation system. They assisted the homeowner in ventilating the building and confirmed there was no presence of carbon monoxide," the municipality stated in a news release.
