NWT MP Michael McLeod has officially endorsed Mark Carney for prime minister.
In a statement he released on Facebook on Monday, McLeod noted Carney's ties to the territory, adding his resume makes him the right pick for the job.
Carney, who was born in Fort Smith, has most recently been an advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Before that, he was the governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
On Jan. 24, ϳԹ asked McLeod who would endorse as Liberal leader and was told he would make his announcement would be soon after hearing from the candidates first.
"My position has been to try to wait until I hear from everybody," said McLeod. "There's still some new people entering the race. I want to ensure that people are coming to me for support. I want to be able to see what they know about the North, what their vision for the North is and maybe even have some commitments made."
McLeod's touted Carney's ϳԹ roots and that his professional accomplishments will serve him well.
"I am proud to stand with Mark Carney and hope you will as well,” said McLeod in his statement.
Chrystia Freeland is also in the running for the Liberal leadership and is seen Carney's biggest competition right now.
The Liberals will pick their new leader by March 9. By then, the NWT Liberals should also have its candidate for the next federal election announced.
At the latest, it'll be before Parliament returns from being prorogued on March 24, according to David Monroe, chair of the territorial party's board of directors.
