The Yellowknife Community Foundation has launched what it's calling the Darrel Mack Memorial Fund, created in memory of Darrel Mack, a beloved community member who passed away earlier this year after battling cancer.
The fund will support food security initiatives for young people and single parents in the NWT, according to a news release from the foundation.
Mack, described as charismatic, generous and deeply rooted in community values, was diagnosed with stage four esophageal cancer in 2021. He co-wrote the lyrics to his wife Leela Gilday鈥檚 song North Star Calling, including the line 鈥淪earching for light through darkest days,鈥� which became a guiding message during his illness, the foundation notes.
鈥淒arrel clearly made a deep impact on his community,鈥� said foundation board chair Sara Brown. 鈥淲e鈥檙e honoured to help memorialize him.鈥�
Donations to the fund will support ongoing community needs and help carry Mack鈥檚 legacy forward, the foundation added.
