The Yellowknife Community Foundation has launched what it's calling the Darrel Mack Memorial Fund, created in memory of Darrel Mack, a beloved community member who passed away earlier this year after battling cancer.

The fund will support food security initiatives for young people and single parents in the NWT, according to a news release from the foundation.

Mack, described as charismatic, generous and deeply rooted in community values, was diagnosed with stage four esophageal cancer in 2021. He co-wrote the lyrics to his wife Leela Gildays song North Star Calling, including the line Searching for light through darkest days, which became a guiding message during his illness, the foundation notes.

Darrel clearly made a deep impact on his community, said foundation board chair Sara Brown. Were honoured to help memorialize him.

Donations to the fund will support ongoing community needs and help carry Macks legacy forward, the foundation added.
