Mail forwarding now available for wildfire evacuees

Fort Providence residents can get mail sent to Hay River; Whati residents can forward mail to Yellowknife

Canada Post announced on Thursday that evacuees from Fort Providence and Whati can have their mail forwarded to them to either Hay River or Yellowknife while they're away from home. Black Press file photo

Evacuees from Whati and Fort Providence will still be able to get their mail even while they've been forced from their homes.

Canada Post announced on Thursday morning that mail forwarding is available for those affected by what's happened. Those from Fort Providence can pick up their postal business at the Hay River Post Office on Capital Drive, while residents of Whati can have their mail sent to the Yellowknife Main Post Office on Franklin Avenue.

Canada Post indicated that the forwarding service is free of charge and is good for up to 12 months, but you will have to use a credit card to . The corporation stated that anyone who does will receive an automatic refund so long as you register for the service by Oct. 3.

When you pick up your mail, you'll have to bring government-issued identification in order to claim it. If someone is picking up mail on your behalf, proof of authorization just be provided.

The post offices in both communities have been placed under what's known as 'red alert', meaning they're closed until further notice and all mail is being held in a secure place until further notice.
