Cheeky Northlands sign with suggestive message to Niven covered up

City confirms that Northlands itself painted over words that took shot at neighbourhood

It looks like a streak of black paint has covered up the 'Suck it Niven! :).' message that onced graced the Northlands' welcome signs. How much of a role the city had in this remains unclear.

Northlands’ welcome sign at its front en- trance no longer features that very specific message to Niven.

Originally ingrained in one of the eight ptarmigan that make up the bottom of each sign read ‘Suck it Niven ! :).’ Now, it appears that message has been covered up with a streak of black paint.

Abby Schelew, a communications advisor for the city, originally responded to Yellowknifer’s questions about the sign by referring to Bylaw 5045, which notes that all signs re-quire a development permit from the city.

“The City of Yellowknife will approve or decline a development permit based on several factors, including the content of the sign,” Schelew wrote, adding that the municipality would address the sign, referring to it as an issue and would work with the Northlands community to find a resolution.

When he was asked about it, Coun. Garett Cochrane said the sign change was purely a voluntary decision, adding that he found out about the sign change on Sept. 16 through word of mouth.

“Any neighbourhood that decides to take action to de-escalate is perfectly fine with me,” he said, adding that he personally didn’t see anything wrong with a bit of good humour, however.

In an email to ϳԹ on Friday morning, a city spokesperson confirmed that Northlands was indeed the one that covered the message in question.

"The City will continue to work with Northlands to ensure the sign is replaced appropriately, and reflects the community it represents," stated the email.
